We are 2 days from Wrestle Kingdom 13 and i have some interesting facts you should know

We are just days away from Wrestle Kingdom 13 and for all the non- NJPW fans this is a big deal and you should definitely tune in for this spectacle on January 4th. But to start of Wrestle Kingdom week I’m going to give you some fun facts that you should know about this upcoming event and also be on the lookout for reasons why you should tune in a watch Wrestle Kingdom.

*Wrestle Kingdom has always been held on January 4th even before the event was named Wrestle Kingdom

1. Wrestle Kingdom use to be a video game.

We all remember Yukes for their WWE wrestling games but a lot of people don’t know that they actually made a wrestling game featuring other wrestlers from different promotions in Japan at one point that was released on Xbox 360 and PS2. Check out some game play here.

2.  7 titles from other promotions has been defended a wrestle kingdom

Kurt Angle defended the IWGP 3rd title, once held by The Beast Brock Lesnar

Wrestle Kingdom has had a working relationship with several Wrestling companies around the world, even WWE back in the 80s. During its long history there have been 7 titles from different promotions that have been defended on January 4th in the Tokyo Dome.

  • IWGP 3rd Title(Wrestle Kingdom 2)
  • GHC World Heavyweight Championship(Wrestle Kingdom 4)
  • TNA World Heavyweight Championship
  • NWA World Heavyweight Championship
  • ROH World Championship(x2)
  • All Japan Pro Wrestling Triple Crown Title

*British Heavyweight championship will be defended at Wrestle Kingdom 13

3. Naito has lost 6 of his 8 matches a Wrestle Kingdom

Arguably the most unique wrestler in NJPW Naito is popular with the fans and a top notch athlete in the ring but luck hasn’t really been on his side going into Wrestle Kingdom 13. He will face Chris Jericho for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship in a match that should be one of their show stealers. Jericho is getting up in age but he is still a draw in the wrestling world and a solid in ring competitor.

  • Only wins were at Wrestle Kingdom 4 and 11
  • Losses occurred at
    • Wrestle Kingdom 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 12

4. The IWGP Heavy weight championship has only changed hands 3 times at Wrestle Kingdom

  • Wrestle Kingdom 2
  • Wrestle Kingdom 3
  • Wrestle Kingdom 5

5. No one has successfully cashed in the G1 Briefcase at Wrestle Kingdom

Yes you heard that correctly, NJPW likes to promote their matches and not squander opportunities on anytime cash in that can make or break a superstar. Instead let them prove their selves on the grandest stage. No one and I mean no one has ever successfully cashed in the briefcase and won at Wrestle Kingdom but with so many rumors swirling Tanahashi might be the first to do it.

6. Hiroshi Tanahashi is Mr. Wrestle Kingdom

Tanahashi is the savior of NJPW but he is also what I consider Mr. Wrestle Kingdom. I love Kenny Omega but history is all on The Aces side.  To start off Tanahashi has been involved on every single main card of a Wrestle Kingdom show (we are talking back to when the name the show Wrestle Kingdom and beyond). On 6 of those occasions Tanahashi has entered Wrestle Kingdom with a title whether it was the IWGP Heavyweight or the Intercontinental championship. He also has the most title matches and Title Wins in Wrestle Kingdom boasting 10 title matches and winning(whether defending or becoming the new champion) 7 times. He has legendary matches with some of the greatest to ever step in the ring in Japan and all of his matches are ones you can go back and watch over and over again.

If you want to talk about a legacy on the grandest stage outside of WWE than you want to talk about Tanahashi. Wrestle Kingdom will be live this Friday at 3am ET/ preshow starts at 2am. This is something that I promise you that you do not want to miss. If you are not already signed up for NJPW world then please do it. This is the best $10 you can spend on watching wrestling anywhere. Look out for more as I have articles coming all week on NJPW including previews, predictions, and reasons to watch.
