Giannis went on to say earlier this week that he still believes he’s the favorite to win the NBA MVP award:
“I still am,” Antetokounmpo told Bleacher Report when asked if he is still the MVP favorite. To be sure, that’s his opinion, yet he acknowledges the public narrative. “I’m one of the best players in the league. We’re going to the playoffs. I’m still in the discussion. I might not be the favorite anymore, but I’m still in the discussion. That’s how I feel.”
A lot of his teammates side with the Greek Freak and believe that he should be the league’s MVP but the overall team performance has derailed his MVP campaign.
This year was supposed to be the year that the Bucks became a real threat in the east. They had all the pieces and the defense to be a threat. J-Kidd was doing a great job coaching this team then something happened. I mean yes they snagged Eric Bledsoe and don’t get me wrong he is good but I forgot he played for the Bucks as the season went on. J-Parker came back and he is a really good scorer but hasn’t been able to find his groove. The team went from being a top contender in the first 10 games of the season to holding on by a thread fighting just to get in the play offs.
Its not like they don’t have the pieces and Giannis claims the chemistry is great but something isn’t clicking for consistent play. One minute the Bucks with dominate you on both sides of the court but in a instant all that can change. More iso ball is played and less ball movement. They still have time to get it all together but its going to take some soul searching.
Giannis is still putting up numbers. He continues to grow as a player and every player in the league acknowledges him as one of the best in the world. He is averaging 27-10-5 shooting 53%. Giannis has was the favorite to win the MVP before the year started and at the beginning of the season (first 10 games) but he got overshadowed by James Harden and LeBron James.
Yes he is still putting up numbers but honestly Dame Lillard and Anthony Davis are even ahead of him. They are both playing great and their team put on some amazing streaks in the second half of the season but the Bucks haven’t found their groove and that’s hurting Giannis MVP campaign significantly.
Khris Middleton even acknowledged that the team’s 40-35 record is playing a role in his campaign:
“Just cause of where we are standing-wise,” Middleton said. “He’s having a hell of a year, but sometimes you have to have a better record; you gotta win in this league to have the MVP. He’s having a hell of a year. There’s nothing wrong with him not winning it this year; he’s got many more years in this league to be dominant.”
We all know the MVP award is normally given to a guy on a team with a superior record. So unless you are having a record breaking year like Westbrook had last year while his team was struggling then it’s a long shot. Giannis is doing what he always does and like I said in my predictions in the beginning of the year all he had to do was keep elevating his play but the Bucks had to at least be a top 3 seed in the East for him to really capture that award.
I like the Kids confidence but better luck next year at this point. Everyone already believes Harden has the award locked up but I believe LeBron can steal it. Check out my article on LeBron stealing the MVP here:
