Hey I got an interesting fact for you. Did you know back up QB’s are 6-2 in the Super Bowl? Back up QB’s have a similar record to Tom Brady. Hey the Super Bowl is tomorrow and the main matchup everyone is concerned with is Nick Foles vs Tom Brady. Nick Foles like many back up QB who won, took over for the starting QB and for him it was due to Carson Wentz suffering a season ending injury but even I said the eagles can still fly without Carson Wentz. He played up and down during his time but showed up and showed out in the NFC championship game. He is in very good company and I think he could pull off the upset but just for a little fun. I have 5 QB’s here who actually won the Super Bowl.
Super Bowl: IX
Super Bowl Results: Steelers 16, Vikings 6
Much like Foles, Bradshaw rode the bench for the first couple weeks of the season but in Week 7 he got his first start and the Steelers never turned back. He didn’t throw a TD in his first start but he led the Steelers to an 11-2 record from that day forth. The Steelers went on to win the Super bowl that year and that was the first of 4 and all 4 with Bradshaw under center.
“I’ve faced a lot of adversity,” Bradshaw said. “I withstood the trials and I was able to do it. I’ve looked at both sides, being a hero and being a jerk. I think I can handle this very well.”
Super Bowl: XXV
Super Bowl result: Giants 20, Bills 19
Stats: 20-32, 222 yards, 1 TD
Phil Simms broke his foot in week 15 and from there on Jeff Hostetler took over. He won the last 2 games of the season and went on to knock off the Bears and Joe Montana and the 49ers. Plus to cap it all off he walked into the Super bowl and upset the highly favored Bills in a thriller.
Super Bowl: XXXIV
Super Bowl result: Rams 23, Titans 16
Super stats: 24-45, 414 yards, 2 TDs
Kurt Warner is one of my favorite Cinderella stories. This man was bagging groceries….GROCERIES, then he also played in the Arena Football League (What happened to that League?), and he played for NFL Europe. Now he is a Hall of famer. That year Warner was an unknown and the Rams starting QB went down with a season ending injury in the preseason. But Warner rose to the occasion with a MVP season and led the Rams to a 13-3 record. He won the Super Bowl in the final minutes of the game with a 73 yard TD pass to Issac Bruce. The Greatest show on turf was born that year and a legendary career took off.
Super Bowl: XXXV
Super Bowl result: Ravens 34, Giants 7
Super stats: 12-25, 153 yards, 1 TD
The talk of that year was the all-time great Baltimore Ravens defense but hey Trent was a backup QB and he won a ring. He was a first round bust when he played for the Bucs but the Ravens picked him up and he was just good enough to get them to the Super Bowl and contribute to a win. Can’t really let his stats fool you. The Ravens did win 11 straight games with him under center.
Super Bowl: XXXVI
Super Bowl result: Patriots 20, Rams 17
Super stats: 16-27, 145 yards, 1 TD
Who can forget this man, I mean he is the greatest QB of all time but we must not forget that his first Super Bowl ring came from him being a backup and inserted into the starting spot. Brady literally started from the bottom before taking over after Bledsoe went down. Brady took the Patriots to a 11-3 record the rest of the season. But that’s not the only way he made history. The Tuck Rule game will stick with him forever and on top of that he pulled off the upset over the Rams in the Super Bowl thanks to Adam Vinatieri.
*Bonus: Doug Williams
Super Bowl: XXII
Super Bowl result: Washington 42, Broncos 10
Stats: 18-29, 340 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT
Hey it is black history month and we cannot forget the first Black QB to win a super bowl. At first Williams only started 2 games that season before being benched but took over the starting position right before the play offs started. He led the Redskins to a blowout against the Broncos and threw all 4 of his TD’s in the second quarter.
“I thought about Martin Luther King when he talked about the mountaintop,” said Williams 25 years later. “In my profession I had just reached the mountaintop. It wasn’t about yesterday and it wasn’t about tomorrow. It was about that point in time.”
