Better known as Johnny Wrestling by the crowd at Full Sail Johnny Gargano is one of the best wrestlers in the world in my eyes. Even though I am not very familiar with his work outside of the WWE I have heard about it and researched it. He was one of the top wrestlers on the Indy scene and wrestled in a lot of promotions including Evolve, TNA, and Ring of Honor. He took part in a WWE tryout back in 2015 and gradually made appearances on NXT tapings. Johnny is definitely undersized but leaves the WWE universe amazed every single time he steps into the ring. He has the NXT crowd rallying for him every time he steps in the ring and he will be way over with the WWE universe once he gets called up but I was thinking that maybe Johnny Wrestling could be the biggest underdog story in WWE history.
Sometimes we feel like the WWE officials do not listen to the fans and what they want. NXT has a curse on it where it seems like some of the fan favorite’s momentum dies once they touch the main roster. I think overtime that will change as for now they are so focused on their Royal Rumble and WrestleMania plans but Johnny Gargano is something special and definitely shouldn’t be wasted when it’s time for him to get called up. What do you think of when you think of underdogs In the WWE? I think of names like Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, Mick Foley, Chris Benoit, Daniel Bryan, the list can go on and on but they are all legends and no one ever suspected that they would WWE champions and faces of the company but we as fans all knew they were capable. Johnny Gargano has all the tools to join this elite list and be at the top of it.
To start even though DIY was such a huge success and even managed to give us entertaining matches against teams like The Revival and even better the Authors of Pain. I feel like the heel turn that left everyone shocked that night when Tommaso Ciampa broke everyone’s heart was a beautiful move. Whenever they feud it they will be the biggest rivalry of 2018. Fans were already behind Johnny more than Tommaso from the start but that paved the way for what we are getting now out of Gargano which is redemption and the quest to become Johnny wrestling again. Week after week he left us with entertaining matches even in his losses. When he fought guys that were 3 times bigger than him, he pulled out every move in his arsenal to beat them.
Even though he is being booked to lose some matches he is still winning over fans. The underdog story can start in NXT honestly. He is in the hunt for the NXT title and I feel like they should continue to build on his story of redemption and proving he can be Johnny Wrestling again (even though he already has) and do it without Ciampa. Put him in the main event of the next NXT takeover and make put the title on him. He is a true fan favorite. He isn’t clever or anything like that on the mic it’s just his backstory and trials and tribulations that have the fans all tuned in to every single word and every single match and just like he showed when he faced Kassius Ohno, you can always call upon him to give you a 5 star match with nearly anybody on any given night.
I wouldn’t stop just there, I’m sure they already have plans to put him on the 205 live once he is called up but seriously has he not proven that he can hang with the big guys. He can hang with the likes of Finn Balor, Roman Reigns, AJ Styles, and if he is cleared and comes back to wrestle even Daniel Bryan. Putting him in 205 live will only limit him when he should just wrestle on the main car like a lot of guys on 205 should. He will be a huge draw and give your 10 or more matches that will be in the top 50 matches of the year. Honestly when I think of Johnny he reminds me of the bearded goat a little. Undersized, well rounded in the ring and all the fans behind him pushing for him to be the top guy. Every once in a while we get a really huge underdog story going into WrestleMania. Daniel Bryan was the last one and now Johnny Gargano could be the next and biggest one. Guys like Daniel Bryan paved the way for Indy stars to shine in the WWE and showed WWE what there is to offer. Guys like Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, and Chris Benoit paved the way for the little guys to get a shot at the WWE championship and Johnny Gargano has the story, and the in ring skills to become the biggest underdog that the WWE has ever had.
