After I believe 2 years of anticipation Carmelo Anthony is finally on the move. About 20 mins ago Carmelo Anthony was traded to the OKC Thunder in a deal where the Knicks will get Enes Kanter, Doug McDermott and a 2018 second round draft pick in return. Melo agreed to being traded to the Rockets and later added the Cavaliers and the Thunder as 2 teams he would waive his trade clause to go to. ESPN did report that the deal is done but the trade call won’t happen until Monday. It is also reported that Melo will be at OKC’s training camp on Tuesday as he did want to be traded before training camp. The deed is done but with Melo going to the Thunder now, what does that mean for the western conference?
Can they contend?
The west is packed and with all of these major moves happening over the summer it feels like a lot of teams will be battling for second place. The Thunder have a very unique big 3. They have Westbrook that can do it all, a great 2 way player in in Paul George and now an elite scorer in Carmelo Anthony. The biggest problem the media will make out of all this is who is going to take over the game in the 4th quarter and honestly I would mind either of them doing it because they are all capable. The Warriors are still a strong team and I really don’t see anyone knocking them off just yet but maybe the Thunder can contend to play against them in the Western Conference Finals which would make a very good series.
Will the Thunder use Melo properly?
I think they will. It’s well known that Melo isn’t a top tier defensive player but I think a lot of teams messed up when they tried to make him a 2 way player instead of just being the natural scorer that he is. Melo is one of the best Iso players in the league and I think OKC will use him as just that…a scorer. Don’t expect him to be really heavy on defense but do expect him to be used a lot on offense to score and spread the floor out.
Have the thunder done enough to make Westbrook commit to an extension?
That is the question that still remains and honestly I think it’s still a 50/50 chance. The Thunder have been working hard to take some of the pressure off of Westbrook and they had an amazing off season with these 2 off season trades. Westbrook has yet to give an answer on if he will sign but I think he will probably talk to both Melo and Paul before that decision is made. I think he wants to make sure that he can possibly get Paul George to stay in OKC before making that decision because we all know how verbal Paul has been about his intentions to play in LA. We have until October 16 to find out if Russ will sign or he will be an unrestricted free agent next month.
OKC opens up their season at the Knicks on Oct 19. The season openers around the league are shaping up to be very good and I can’t wait to see what happens next. I feel like the Knicks are not done just yet and they will probably try to move Porzingis next. If they do move Porzingis I feel like Boston should take a shot at getting him. They have enough to get the deal done just don’t trade Jayson Tatum in the process that guy is going to be something special.
